Canine Brief Pain Inventory (CBPI):
Purpose: The owner’s assessment of the severity of chronic pain in their dog and how that pain interferes with the animal’s normal functioning.
Description and Characteristics: The CBPI is a questionnaire with two dimensions, ‘Severity’ and ‘Interference’. The Severity dimension consists of a 4 questions 0-10 numerical rating scale assessment of the severity of pain (at its worst, least, average and right now). The responses from those 4 questions can be averaged to obtain a ‘Severity Score’ for the dog. The Interference dimension consists of a 6 question 0-10 numerical rating scale assessment of how the pain interferes with the dog’s normal functioning. The responses from those 6 questions can be averaged to obtain an ‘Interference Score’. In addition there is a 1-question Likert scale global assessment of the dog’s overall quality of life, which gives the owner the opportunity to address the relative importance of the pain.
Proven valid, reliable, and responsive in the following populations:
1. Companion dogs with osteoarthritis
2. Companion dogs with appendicular bone cancer
