Measuring Pain Behaviors in Lizards with Bone-Related Disease
This study is open to any lizard that has a recent history of orthopedic or musculoskeletal disease. The study’s main goal is to test the reliability and validity of a reptile-specific scale that is designed to use owner observations of their pet’s behavior to help qualify pain. This pain scale will ultimately help veterinarians improve pain management in reptiles. We will also perform objective tests including physical examination, radiographs, and responsiveness to pain medication.
Lizards receive three free physical examinations, free radiographs to diagnose bone-related illness, and free screening blood work. Those who qualify as healthy controls will receive a discounted physical examination, free husbandry evaluation, free recheck examinations and a $10 gift card following completion of study. Owners must be willing to bring their pets to VHUP for three separate visits, which include the first exam, a recheck in 7 days, and a final recheck at 30 days.
