Swine Production

Swine Production

Site Introduction

As the modern society expands and population growth increases, the demand for meat protein will continue to rise. One of the sources of such protein has traditionally been pork products. With regions around the world plagued with famine becoming more numerous, pork production will have to face its challenges of increased efficiency without compromising the affordability of products in question, or the welfare of the animals used. We are now at the turning point where production of pork has to keep up with the world’s demand, and this website’s purpose is to provide information and to outline some alternative production techniques that favorably affect the efficiency as well as welfare of the swine animal production.

This website is setup in terms of general husbandry techniques currently applied in direct juxtaposition to alternative techniques currently in research in our facility and their welfare implications. The setup in organized by lifecycle stages in swine production at the top of the page. This setup is meant to separate specific issues and challenges that can appear throughout the lifecycle in a swine facility.

Please click through welfare and husbandry implications for each life stage at the navigation ribbon on the left for more information.
