Distinguishing features
Cocklebur is a rough coarse annual herb up to 3 feet tall and widely branched; the stem is often red-blotched; leaves are alternate, simple, toothed or lobed, triangular or heartshaped; the flower are green, not typical of Compositae; the fruit is a bur with hooked spines, enclosing two seeds.
