The horses we use in our research are all Thoroughbreds, between the ages of 3 and 7 years. While most of them are purchased, we do occasionally acquire horses through donations. Most of our horses have raced, but were not fast enough to earn their keep. Our criteria for a research horse does not ask for speed, but does require that they be sound with a normal airway. We generally keep our horses for about a year, after which they are retired to new homes and become riding horses or pets. Some of our retiree's have become successful show horses, while others are making very lovely pasture ornaments!
