Below is a gross photo and a photomicrograph of kidneys are from an old rat with chronic progressive nephropathy.
Remember that old rats commonly die from chronic renal failure and these kidneys are typical of idiopathic end-stage renal disease. End-stage kidneys are remarkably similar for all mammalian species.

Clinical signs (polydipsia, polyuria, malaise, halitosis, vomiting, and diarrhea) are NOT lesions.
