1a. In utero: Lungs are atelectatic and nonfunctional. Blood is shunted via the ductus arteriosus into the aorta, bypassing the lungs.
Following birth: Lungs are aerated. Blood flows through the lungs due to constriction of the ductus arteriosus and the volume expansion of the pulmonary vascular bed.
