Lesion	Pathogen
Benign prostatic hyperplasia	Non-cancerous testosterone associated proliferation of the prostatic epithelium inducing an enlargement of the gland.
Squamous metaplasia	Squamous metaplasia of the prostatic epithelium associated with excess amounts of estrogen. An estrogen-producing Sertoli cell tumor is usually responsible.
Cystic hyperplasia	Usually secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia or squamous metaplasia. It is caused by obstruction of the ducts that transport prostatic secretions to the urethra resulting in multiple, fluid-filled cavities.
Paraprostatic cysts	Fluid-filled cysts developing adjacent to the prostate when abnormal tissue remain from embryonic development. The cysts begin to develop shortly after birth but may not cause signs or be detected until the dog is several years old.
Bacterial infection (bacterial prostatitis).	Bacteria may enter and infect the prostate ascending the urethra or descending the urethra from an infection in the urinary bladder. It is usually associated with a preexisting abnormality of the prostate, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Prostatic abscess	Progression of a bacterial prostatitis with accumulation of pus and abscess formation.

Primary prostatic adenocarcinoma	prostatic glandular epithelium of alveoli and ducts	very aggressive (metastasize via the lymphatics to the internal and external iliac lymph nodes initially; other metastatic sites include pelvic and sublumbar lymph nodes, lungs, and bones)
Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC)	epithelium of the collecting ducts (TCC generally originates from the urethra and/or from the bladder and secondarily infiltrates the prostate. )	TCC generally originates from the urethra and/or from the bladder and secondarily infiltrates the prostate.
