The skin should be examined for the presence
of ectoparasites as well as other skin disorders. Biting and sucking lice
are common and most easily found along the dorsal lumbar area close to the
skin. Pruritis with secondary skin excoriation is indicative of lice
infestation or allergic contact dermatitis. Multiple nodules in the dermis
along the neck and back that ooze a white ribbon like substance when squeezed is
indicative of demodectic mange in the goat. Wool break characterized by
patches of loose and/or missing wool is a very common sequela to severe illness
in the sheep.
